MP3BOARD.COM FOR AUCTION ON EBAY
dotmusic.com
Music portal MP3Board.com put itself up for sale last week with a starting price of $10,000,000. In a bizarre move, the company chose to host its auction with EBay.com, more commonly recognised as a swapshop for stamps and Beanie Babies.
MP3Board.com is one of the most popular digital music sites on the Web, listed third after MP3.com and MP3s.com in PC Data Online's December 1999 audit. It can boast 599,000 unique users, beating more famous sites such as SonyMusic.com, Riffage.com and Emusic.com into a cocked hat.
With such an impressive profile one might have expected the EBay bidding to be fast and furious; alas, at the auction's close yesterday not one offer had been made. While MP3Board.com is one of the top 1000 online presences on Earth, it could also be described as one of the least desirable in the music business. People keep coming back to MP3Board.com because it is provides a ruthlessly efficient means to access MP3 music files, most of which are illegal. In fact, one of the smaller listings on its directory is named "Legal MP3s".
Nevertheless, the site is live and garnering a huge following, which is more than can be said for many web start-ups. According to its owner, MP3Board.com has an offer on the table for "a little bit less" than the $10,000,000 asking price. As long as they manage to steer clear any piracy-related court cases, the mystery buyers could be winning themselves a real bargain.
