'YOU ARE THE LETTER X'

October 07 2000

Music is an affliction of the gods sent to curse the young and impressionable.
A dirty business.

Overtly be part Christian; but covertly be part warhead. Prepare for deflections.

You are the letter x.

Do not flinch when you feel the cold blade of compromise pressed to your neck. Instead make yourself into the snub nose of a gun that's stuck in mouths.

Visionaries lay dicks on chopping boards. Easy rollers only talk about it.
Do not be disheartened by failure up to now. There is honesty in the glowing of valves or the diamond glint of a stylus tip.

Shun the pussy indulgence of corporate bar-tabs. Decline meetings with pampered cocaine freaks.
Do not be dictated to about what is and what isn't. Project yourself like a musical ballistics expert.

Be the ugliest freak in the freakshow. Be proud. Be resolute.
And leave A&R to bleed through the corporate wounds they call ears.

The above was found pasted to a wall near the canal in Castlefield, Manchester when I played the 'In The City' music festival / conference. I have no idea as to the identity of its writer; nor do I know whether it was lifted from a book or written specially for the event.

But, shortly before going on stage before an audience of exactly the kind of "pampered cocaine freaks" described, I certainly felt that the poster had been created especially for me and the other bands playing 'In The City'.

After all the hype and expectation, the poster (which I will soon scan in and place in the 'Found Objects' section) was without doubt the best thing I went home with, leaving by far the most lasting impression.

I am the letter x.
